Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and the fifth most abundant substance. About 99% is
deposited in the bones and teeth. The remaining 1% is involved in the soft tissues, intracellular fluids, and blood.
Calcium is used in the development and maintenance of bone structure and rigidity. It functions in the clotting process,
nerve transmission and muscle stimulation, parathyroid hormone function, and metabolism of vitamin D, to name a few.
The best sources are natural. However, to get the needed amounts without consuming large amounts of food, supplements
may be taken.

Iron is a mineral concentrate in the blood which is present in every living cell. It is the mineral that is found in the largest amounts in the blood. It is involved in respiration by being the main carrier vehicle for getting oxygen to all the cells in the body. It is essential to the oxidation of fatty acids. The major function of iron is to combine with protein and copper in making haemoglobin, the colouring matter of red blood cells. Haemoglobin transports oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the tissues, which need oxygen to maintain the basic life functions. Thus, iron builds up the quality of the blood and increases resistance to stress, the immune system, energy production, growth in children, and resistance to disease. The best source of dietary iron is liver, with oysters, heart, lean meat, and tongue as second choices. Leafy green vegetables, whole grains, dried fruits, legumes, and molasses are also rich in iron.

Magnesium is an essential mineral that accounts for about 0.05% of the body’s total weight. Nearly 70% of the body’s supply is located in the bones together with calcium and phosphorus, while 30% is found in cellular fluids and some soft tissue. Magnesium helps promote absorption and metabolism of other minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium. It also helps utilise the B complex and vitamins C and E in the body. It aids during bone growth and is necessary for proper functioning of the muscles, including those of the heart.
Magnesium appears to be widely distributed in foods, being found chiefly in fresh green vegetables, where it is an essential element of chlorophyll. Other excellent sources include raw, unmilled wheat germ, soybeans, milk, whole grains, seafoods, figs, corn, apples, and oil-rich seeds and nuts, especially almonds.

Selenium is an essential mineral found in minute amounts in the body. Selenium is one of the essential body substances that can be used in a preventive manner for many diseases, including cancer, arteriosclerosis, stroke, cirrhosis, arthritis, and emphysema. Selenium is a natural antioxidant that protects against free radicals and appears to preserve elasticity of tissue that becomes less elastic with aging. The selenium content of food is dependent upon the extent of its presence in the soil, whether directly, as in plant foods, or indirectly, as in animal products whose selenium levels are derived from food. Deficiencies of selenium can lead to serious illness and disease. Selenium deficiency is of particular concern in countries such as New Zealand, Finland and China where many soils have a naturally low concentration of this important mineral. Good food sources of Selenium are brewer’s yeast, organ and muscle meats, fish and shellfish, grains, cereals, Brazil nuts, broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers, radishes, garlic, onions, torula, molasses, and dairy products.

Zinc is an essential trace mineral occurring in the body in larger amounts than any other trace element except iron. It is present in all tissues. Supplementary forms are zinc sulfate, zinc acetate, zinc gluconate, zinc citrate, amino acid chelates of zinc, zinc dipicolinate, zinc aspartate and zinc orotate. Zinc has a variety of functions. It is known for its ability to fight disease and to protect the immune system. It is involved in the Krebs cycle and energy production. Zinc also credited with increasing male sex drive and potency because of its ability to regulate testosterone in the prostate. It is related to the normal absorption and action of vitamins, especially the B complex. It is essential for the taste buds and skin’s oil gland function (and therefore is known for the treatment of diaper rash and acne), and is important in the healing of wounds and burns. The best sources of all trace elements in proper balance are natural unprocessed foods. Diets high in protein, whole-grain products, brewer’s yeast, wheat bran, wheat germ, herring, and pumpkin seeds are usually high in zinc.
